Two women and a man were killed when their car plunged into water from Shibaura Wharf in Tokyo's Minato Ward on Thursday night in what is believed to be a multiple suicide, police said Friday.
A 58-year-old company manager, his 63-year-old wife and a 53-year-old home helper were retrieved from the car, which had sunk about 9 meters, and rushed them to a hospital.
But all three were confirmed dead shortly before midnight Thursday, police said. A resident witnessed the accident and reported it to police at about 8:25 p.m.
Police said the man's wife was wheelchair-bound with a disability. The other woman who died in the incident was her home helper.
Police said the couple were from Kodaira in western Tokyo and the home helper from Tokyo's Shinagawa Ward. Police did not reveal the names of the deceased.
Police said they suspect suicide because they found no evidence on the wharf that the car had braked before plunging into the water.
