Visiting Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong, meeting with Japanese counterpart Yohei Kono on Wednesday, asked for Japanese financial support for local elections scheduled for February 2002.
Kono said Japan is ready to continue supporting the democratic process in Cambodia, a commitment that will be reflected at a meeting of donor countries to Cambodia to be held in Tokyo in June, a Foreign Ministry official said.
However, Kono said Cambodia needs to show a greater transparency in decision-making processes and the eradication of corruption in order to gain further support of donor countries, the officials said.
Namhong replied that Cambodia is working on good governance as a major reform measure as well as trying to eradicate poverty in the country, the official said.
