The government on Friday decided to seek Diet ratification of an international treaty intended to eliminate the worst forms of child labor around the world.

Government officials said the Diet is expected to ratify the Convention on the Worst Forms of Child Labor, which was adopted by the International Labor Organization at its annual conference in June 1999.

As of Feb. 16, the convention had been ratified by 63 countries, including the United States, Britain, Canada and Italy. It aims to ban practices such as prostitution and pornography involving children under 18 years old.
