Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori easily survived an opposition-proposed censure motion Wednesday in the Diet on the strength of the ruling bloc's numbers.
Opposition leaders plan to continue to call for Mori to resign immediately, saying that by staying in power he is merely causing a political vacuum.
Mori effectively told his Liberal Democratic Party colleagues Saturday that he intends to step down.
