Japan's gross domestic product expanded a seasonally adjusted 0.8 percent during the October-December period, the Cabinet Office said in a preliminary report Monday.
This marked a turnaround from the 0.6 percent contraction posted in the July-September period.
Government officials and financial market observers warned, however, against optimism, citing the negative economic data released since the beginning of the year and the impact of a slowing U.S. economy.
