NEC Corp. said Thursday it will allocate a larger proportion of systems engineers' income through its merit-based pay system in response to increasing competition in the field of information technology.

The proportion of annual income linked to results will be raised in April from the current 20 percent to more than 50 percent for competent engineers, the leading high-technology company said.

Specifically, merit-based annual pay will be determined under a ceiling of 12 million yen in accordance with results and the difficulty of work done by engineers.

Combined with fixed base pay, which will be 10 percent to 15 percent higher than under the current pay system, the most competent engineers will earn more than 20 million yen a year, NEC said.

The new pay system will apply to engineers professionally recognized by a screening committee consisting of both internal and external experts.
