Matsushita Communication Industrial Co. said Wednesday that it has teamed up with U.S.-based Iridian Technologies Inc. to license basic biometric recognition technology and jointly develop next-generation systems for recognizing irises.

MCI and Iridian will jointly develop for computers a camera that recognizes humans, the company said, adding that it should hit the North American market in May.

MCI, a unit of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., also said it is developing a wide range of next-generation products that recognize irises and are ideally suited for office security and home protection.

"Iris recognition has greater accuracy in recognition technology than other biometric methods," said Toshio Yokoyama, senior managing director of MCI.

Each person's iris has a unique pattern that remains virtually unchanged throughout one's life. The iris system verifies a person's identity by comparing their iris code with previously recorded code data.
