The United States has agreed to a plan to build a 2,000-meter runway at a relocation site for the U.S. Marine Corps' Futenma Air Station in Okinawa, the government said Tuesday.

The move was reported during a meeting Tuesday attended by central and Okinawa prefectural government officials to discuss the size and construction methods of facilities planned for the relocation site in Nago, northern Okinawa.

Attendees of the sixth round of the meeting held at the prime minister's official residence included Ryutaro Hashimoto, minister in charge of Okinawa affairs, and Okinawa Gov. Keiichi Inamine. The talks began in August.
