Foreign Minister Yohei Kono and his visiting Cuban counterpart, Felipe Ramon Perez, have agreed on a joint project to support medical activities in Honduras as part of efforts to strengthen ties between Japan and Cuba.

It is the first step of its kind between the two countries, a Foreign Ministry official said Monday.

Under the 6 million yen project, Japan will provide medicine and medical equipment to a Japanese-built hospital in northeast Honduras, while Cuba will send doctors to the hospital, the official said.
