OSAKA -- A 48-year-old Singaporean man has been indicted by prosecutors on suspicion of bringing about 5,200 pills of illegal drugs into Kansai airport, including a new kind of pill containing three illegal drugs, prosecution sources said Monday.

Sim Kim San is alleged to have violated the Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Law, among others, by bringing the pills into Japan.

The new pill combines a narcotic, a stimulant and a synthetic hallucinogen.

It is the first time the variety has been confiscated in the country, the customs officials said, adding that information about the effects of these drugs and the extent of their circulation is unknown.

The officials said the confiscated stash comprised an estimated 1,500 of these new pills, plus 3,700 tablets of the popular drug Ecstasy. The loot has an estimated street value of 30 million yen.

Sim, who arrived at Kansai airport Jan. 31 from Malaysia, was arrested by Osaka police after an immigration check discovered he was hiding the pills in his jacket pockets and in his suitcase, which had a false bottom, according to the officials.

Sim has reportedly confessed to the charge, saying he carried the pills because an acquaintance in Singapore promised to pay him 3,000 Singapore dollars.
