For many Japanese, France has long represented wine and fashion. That image, however, is changing with French companies in other business fields increasing their presence in Japan.
Renault SA's acquisition two years ago of a controlling stake in the financially troubled Nissan Motor Co. and Carrefour's entry to the Japanese retail market late last year are symbolic of the massive French capital inflow into Japan in recent years.
In fiscal 1999 through the end of March 2000, France became the top foreign investor in Japan by bringing in $6.69 billion, accounting for nearly one-third of overall foreign investment here, according to Japan External Trade Organization.
