IBM Japan Ltd. chalked up 182 billion yen in pretax profits in 2000, up 48.1 percent over the year before, a second consecutive year-on-year increase, according to the firm's earnings report.
Sales for the business year to Dec. 31 rose 9.4 percent to 1.64 trillion yen.
The company, the Japanese arm of IBM Corp. of the United States, attributed the higher sales to a 50 percent rise in revenues from sales of computer systems related to electronic commerce and client and product management.
However, its net profits fell 4.8 percent to 106.2 billion yen in reaction to a strong rise in profits the previous year, company officials said Wednesday.
IBM Japan President Takuma Otoshi said he hopes the company will outperform its rivals this year as corporate spending on information technology will likely grow further.
