Global warming has already started to affect the environment and a rise in sea levels will threaten up to 200 million people by 2080, according to a new report released Saturday.
Adopted in Geneva by a working group of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the report predicts that global warming will increasingly threaten ecosystems and agriculture, increase the frequency and severity of natural disasters, and could displace several tens of millions of people in Asia, officials of the Environment Ministry said.
The document also forecasts an increase in extreme weather resulting in more flooding, droughts, decreased agricultural yields and a heightened risk to fragile ecosystems, such as coral reefs and mangrove forests, they said.
