Toshiba Corp. said Friday that it will reorganize its in-house corporate structure to promote the company's information technology and mobile equipment businesses.

The reorganization, effective April 1, is also aimed at enhancing management efficiency, Toshiba said.

Under the reorganization, the number of in-house companies will be increased to 10 from the current eight.

Toshiba's current corporate structure, launched in April 1999, reorganized the company's business units to give them managerial autonomy and more control over individual resources in order to enhance their different business strategies. The move is a response to changes in Toshiba's business environment, the company said.

Cool joint venture

OSAKA -- Sanyo Electric Co. and Toshiba Corp. have agreed to cooperate in the development and production of air conditioners for commercial use, officials said Friday.

The agreement was concluded between the two major electronics makers' subsidiaries, Sanyo Electric Air Conditioning Co. and Toshiba Carrier Corp., and is aimed at cutting development times and production costs.

Products to be developed under the joint project will be sold under the Sanyo and Toshiba brands from this fall.

Makers of commercial air conditioners face rising costs due to stricter environmental rules amid a slowing growth of domestic demand, according to industry officials.
