OSAKA -- A 34-year-old Spanish man has been arrested and sent to prosecutors on suspicion of attempting to smuggle about 5,000 tablets of MDMA, or ecstasy, into Japan, Kansai airport police and customs officials said Thursday.
The police and customs office said Biosca Luis tried to smuggle the drugs into Japan through Kansai airport by hiding them in a backpack Jan. 16.
The suspect told investigators he was promised about 340,000 yen for the smuggling job, the authorities said.
