In a bid to clear a legal hurdle, the two regional call firms of the giant Nippon Telegraph and Telephone group unveiled Thursday a revised plan to launch L-mode Internet access service for fixed-line phones.

NTT East Corp. and NTT West Corp. submitted the plan to the Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications Ministry for approval to start the service in April.

L-mode, a fixed-phone version of NTT DoCoMo Inc.'s i-mode, allows users to access the Internet from fixed-line phones with a liquid crystal display panel without using a computer or having a contract with an Internet service provider.
