An earthquake measuring 4.4 in magnitude jolted a wide area of western Japan on Sunday morning, the Meteorological Agency said. No damage or injuries were reported immediately.

The quake occurred at around 9:17 a.m. and registered 4 on the Japanese intensity scale of 7 in Yonago, Sakaiminato and Hiezu -- all in Tottori Prefecture -- and Yasugi in Shimane Prefecture, the agency said.

A quake of 4 on the Japanese scale is strong enough to topple unstable objects and awaken most people.

The focus of the temblor is estimated to be about 10 km underground in eastern Shimane Prefecture.
