Uwajima Fisheries High School, whose training ship the Ehime Maru sank after colliding with a U.S. Navy submarine off Hawaii on Friday, is one of many Japanese fisheries schools that train students in Hawaiian waters.

Hawaii is popular for its safety, medical services and its ability to respond systematically in times of emergency.

According to a national association that deals with training ships for fisheries high schools, there are 47 fisheries high schools nationwide in Japan.
