Nearly 80 percent of people who submitted opinions to the National Police Agency on its proposed draft of an amendment to the Road Traffic Law favor harsher punishments for flagrant violations such as drunken driving, the NPA said Friday.
But many people oppose heavier penalties for petty violations such as illegal parking, said the NPA, which asked the public to submit their opinions on the draft of the amendment.
The NPA, which received 2,626 comments, mostly by e-mail, between Dec. 28 and Jan. 24, plans to submit a bill to the Diet by the end of this month.
