The ruling coalition on Thursday discussed three new options for granting Japanese citizenship to permanent residents of Japan, one of which proposes scrapping the lengthy screening process applicants must endure.

The other proposals involved shortening the screening process for applicants and granting citizenship to permanent residents who would later be able to give it up.

The panel was set up in mid-January to revise the Nationality Law during the current 150-day Diet session.

The revision is in response to requests from permanent residents unhappy over their lack of rights in Japan.

The Liberal Democratic Party, New Komeito and the New Conservative Party are involved in the discussions.
