Ford Japan Ltd., a sales subsidiary of Ford Motor Co. of the United States, said Thursday it will launch three new models in Japan to achieve overall sales of 15,000 units this year.

The target figure compares with 12,985 units for last year, including Ford proprietary models and Ford-brand cars produced by Mazda Motor Corp.

The three new models are the Mondeo sedan and two sport utility vehicles, the Escape and the new Explorer.

Ford Japan President Eiji Iwakuni said his firm has been working to strengthen Ford's brand image and its presence in the Japanese market, pointing out that 2001 is the year to take a big step in increasing its share.
