The Tokyo Regional Taxation Bureau on Wednesday began investigating the records of a sacked Foreign Ministry official suspected of embezzling state funds to determine whether he avoided paying taxes, sources familiar with the case said.
Bureau officials visited the apartment of Katsutoshi Matsuo, 55, in Tokyo's Bunkyo Ward and began examining his accounts at four banks to determine if taxes should be imposed, the sources said.
The bureau also plans to study whether taxes should be imposed on his girlfriend, to whom he may have given money, they said.
