Sony Corp. said Wednesday that it has developed the world's largest full-color organic electroluminescence display panel.
The consumer electronics giant plans to begin mass-producing the 13-inch organic EL display panel, which is for use as television and computer monitors, in 2003.
While the prototype is as thin as 1.4 mm, a further reduction in its thickness is possible, Sony said.
Self-luminous organic EL displays offer high contrast and quick response to moving images and are expected to replace cathode-ray tubes and liquid-crystal displays.
Small EL displays are already used in mobile terminals such as cell phone handsets.
The application of EL displays to large devices is difficult due to uneven luminance. Sony says it has overcome this problem with its electric-current control technology.
