Air traffic control systems will be upgraded after investigators determined incorrect instructions from controllers caused Wednesday's near collision between two Japan Airlines jetliners, the Transport Ministry announced Saturday.
Following an urgent meeting Friday of the ministry's air traffic control review panel, six recommendations were made for changes in the air traffic control system. The changes will be implemented in June, officials from the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Ministry said.
Ministry officials on Friday admitted an instruction to descend given to the wrong aircraft by air traffic controllers was the likely trigger of the near miss between a JAL Boeing 747 and a JAL DC-10 over Yaizu, Shizuoka Prefecture.
