Sega Corp. said Friday it will cut the price of its Dreamcast game console, production of which will be halted in March, in the United States and Japan to reduce inventory.
The product's price will be cut to $99.95 from $149 in the U.S. on Sunday, and to 9,900 yen from 19,900 yen in Japan beginning March 1, the company said.
Sega also plans to cut the price in Europe, it said.
Dreamcast was first sold for 29,800 yen in Japan in November 1998 and reduced to 19,900 yen in June 1999 due to severe competition with the likes of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.'s PlayStation2 and Nintendo Co.'s Game Boy Advance.
On Wednesday, Sega said it will stop production of its loss-making Dreamcast by the end of March and shift to game software.
Some 2.03 million units of Dreamcast remain in stock worldwide. The inventory in Japan amounts to 280,000 units, Sega said.
