An advisory panel to Education Minister Nobutaka Machimura selected Keio University President Yasuhiko Torii as its leader Thursday at its first meeting since the central government was realigned in January.
The Central Education Council, whose members were replaced with the Jan. 6 launch of the Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Ministry, is expected to discuss revision of the 1947 Fundamental Law of Education and a proposal to force those aged 18 or older to engage in community service.
The topics were included in a final report released Dec. 22 by the National Commission on Educational Reform, a private advisory panel that reports to Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori.
