Industrial waste produced by 28 industrial sectors overseen by the Japan Federation of Economic Organizations (Keidanren), dropped to around 24 million tons in 1999 putting the group on track to meet its goal of reducing waste by 75 percent of 1990 levels by 2010, Keidanren officials said on Tuesday.

Industrial waste data submitted by the 28 sectors affiliated with the organization showed that their waste has fallen by nearly 60 percent since 1990, when it totaled more than 61 million tons, and 32 percent from 1998 to 1999.

Officials say they expect to meet the voluntary objective set in 1999 by cutting waste production to 15 million tons by 2010.

All sectors targeted are releasing less waste than in 1990, the report said.

The construction industry produced nearly two-thirds of all waste reported -- about 16 million tons of garbage -- officials said, pointing out that this is also a drop of more than 60 percent since 1990.
