NTT East Corp. will begin in March a six-month experiment using wireless broadband services, which operate at a speed of up to 36 megabytes per second, in and around Tokyo's Shibuya Ward, the company announced Thursday.
Wireless antenna bases will be set up on about 10 homes, 10 offices and in 20 popular locations, with each base covering an area with a radius of 100 meters, the company said.
Some 200 personal computers and 200 mobile terminals with built-in wireless data receivers will be provided for home and office users, as well as for visitors to other sites, such as the Tower Records store and Tsutaya video rental shop in Shibuya Ward.
Users will be able to access broadband services on the Internet, such as on-demand movies, multipoint video conferences and software to upload video images.
More than 40 companies plan to provide content for the experiment, including Digital Hollywood Corp., GAGA Communications Inc. and Sapporo Breweries Ltd, the company said.
