Fuel cell units should be generating 10 million kw of electricity -- equivalent to the amount of power generated by 10 nuclear reactors -- at households and offices by 2020, a panel at the Agency of Natural Resources and Energy revealed in a report compiled this week.
Full-scale use of fuel cell technology in the private sector should start in 2010, with the number of fuel cell-powered vehicles set to reach 5 million by 2020, according to the panel, which is studying the commercial use of fuel cells.
The report sets a de facto government target regarding its policy to promote the transition from the current system of electricity supply via large-scale power stations to a more locally based power supply system.
