Internet service provider AOL Japan Inc. said Tuesday that it will change its name to DoCoMo AOL Inc., effective Feb. 1.
The change follows NTT DoCoMo Inc.'s acquisition of a 42 percent equity stake in AOL Japan late last year, the Tokyo-based company said.
NTT DoCoMo, the nation's largest mobile phone operator, eclipsed America Online Inc. as the company's biggest shareholder by purchasing a stake in AOL Japan under an agreement with the U.S. firm last summer.
At a news conference announcing the name change, AOL Japan President Minoru Nakamura said his company will shortly begin electronic mail and other services via NTT DoCoMo's Internet-capable i-mode mobile phone system.
