Japan's paper and cardboard output grew 3.9 percent in 2000 from 1999 to 31.83 million tons, marking a record high for the second year in a row, the Japan Paper Association said Monday.
The association attributed the increase to strong demand related to information technology, which resulted in a 3.6 percent gain in the production of paper used in advertising leaflets and catalogs, as well as a 5.4 percent rise in the manufacture of cardboard used for personal computer and other electric appliance packaging.
