The embattled Philippine President Joseph Estrada's abrupt announcement Friday night to resign later this year has forced Tokyo to rewrite its diplomatic calendar.
According to government sources, until Estrada's current impeachment trial on corruption and other charges began in early December, Japan had planned to invite him as a state guest during the current fiscal year.
But regardless of the outcome of the impeachment trial -- and even before Friday's development in Philippine politics -- the plan had already become almost impossible to implement for logistic reasons, the sources said.
