Sharp Corp. plans to start mass producing an advanced liquid crystal display in Japan in late 2002 as part of efforts "to meet the needs of the digital age," President Katsuhiko Machida said in Tokyo on Friday.
The Osaka-based electronics maker said the continuous grain silicon LCD can improve picture quality, cut manufacturing costs and reduce electricity consumption in digital products, company officials said.
The device will be applied to various products, including cellphones, personal digital assistants and small personal computers, Machida said.
Sharp said it expects sales of the LCDs to reach 300 billion yen in 2005.
Sharp also announced that it opened a technology strategy office in Tokyo on Jan. 1. The office will take charge of planning the group's technology-related schemes, including alliances and venture businesses.
