NEC Corp. plans to spin off its semiconductor business for high-speed communications networks, as demand is expected to grow in coming years, the company said Wednesday.
NEC will transfer operations related to optical semiconductors as well as microwave silicon and compound semiconductors to a subsidiary it will form in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, in October.
The two types of semiconductors are key components of broadband and mobile networking equipment.
