Police have arrested 20 men and warned 86 other people for stalking offenses since an antistalking law took effect Nov. 24, the National Police Agency said Thursday.
The 106 -- 99 men and seven women -- are suspected of harassing 103 women and six men.
As of Tuesday, six had been indicted and four others fined by summary courts under the new law.
Police lent out telephone recording machines and portable security alarms in 24 cases and gave victims technical advice on how to block cellphone calls and e-mail in 19 cases, the officials said.
Under the antistalking law, stalkers face prison terms of up to a year or fines of up to 1 million yen if they ignore the verbal warnings.
