Domestic shipments of computers and computer peripherals are projected to total 6.852 trillion yen in fiscal 2001, up 4 percent from the 6.606 trillion yen projected for the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2001, an industry group said Tuesday.
The margin of growth in fiscal 2001 is likely to decelerate from the projected 5 percent for fiscal 2000 due to sluggish sales of large computers and a continued decline in the prices of both computers and their peripherals, the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association said.
In fiscal 2001, domestic shipments of large mainframe computers are projected to fall 20 percent in volume terms to 1,240 units and 11 percent in value to 526 billion yen.
Domestic shipments of midsize computers are projected to expand 8 percent in volume to 174,700 units and 5 percent in value to 707 billion yen as a result of the spread of Internet services in Japan.
Domestic PC shipments are expected to rise 13 percent to 13.6 million units.
