Police on Monday served a fresh arrest warrant on a 17-year-old boy from Tochigi Prefecture arrested earlier this month over an explosion caused by a homemade bomb at a video shop in Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward, suspecting him of attempted murder.
The boy, whose name is being withheld because he is a minor, was arrested on Dec. 4 on suspicion of violating the Firearm and Sword Control Law and the Explosives Control Law after he turned himself in at a nearby police box following the blast.
No one was injured in the 8:15 p.m. explosion, which took place in the ward's crowded Kabukicho entertainment district.
The teen, a second-year high school student, was found with another bomb of the same type he threw into the store as well as a shotgun and 39 shells when he was arrested, police said.
Police issued the new warrant after concluding that the bomb he was carrying -- which contained some 400 grams of gunpowder, screws, and blades from paper cutters -- could kill people, sources said.
Investigators also believe the student intended to kill somebody because he told them he "wanted to blow people to pieces, whoever they may be," according to the sources.
