OSAKA -- Professional sumo wrestler Toki hit and killed a middle-aged woman with his car Monday night at an intersection in Osaka, police sources said.
According to the Japan Sumo Association, active sumo wrestlers are forbidden from driving.
Police are questioning Toki, a Tokyo resident whose real name is Jun Tamaki, on suspicion of professional negligence resulting in death. They planned to turn the case over to local prosecutors later Tuesday.
Police also identified the victim Tuesday as Etsuko Ko, a 56-year-old resident of Osaka's Fukushima Ward.
Sumo association chairman Tokitsukaze said Tuesday that there can be "no excuse" for the accident and added that the association will hold an emergency meeting in the middle of the week to discuss disciplinary measures against the wrestler.
