The Diet enacted legislation Wednesday that stipulates ways to deal with quick and radical structural changes driven by the global information technology revolution.
The House of Councilors plenary session approved the so-called IT basic bill with the support of the ruling triumvirate and members of the Democratic Party of Japan.
The law, which takes effect Jan. 6, calls for the creation of an "electronic government," building broadband network infrastructure, promoting electronic commerce, ensuring secure networks and protecting private information.
