In a move widely expected to trigger fierce opposition from affected industries, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's tax panel proposed a new levy on large diesel trucks when they use metropolitan expressways.
Metropolitan officials estimate that the new tax, which was proposed by the panel Friday, would generate up to 15 billion yen a year in additional revenue.
The panel's final report, to be submitted to Gov. Shintaro Ishihara on Thursday, also calls for new taxes on pachinko machines, hotel room fees and industrial waste.
