Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori Monday confirmed he intends to resign within 48 hours, just hours after all 14 members of his Cabinet tendered their resignations in protest of his surprise decision.
In a statement faxed to AFP from Tokyo, the embattled leader said he would shortly turn in his resignation to Valentin Paniagua, the newly elected speaker of Peru's Congress.
"I confirm it," Fujimori said in the faxed statement, adding his departure from office in no way precluded a future career in Peruvian politics.
