Volunteer activities are becoming increasingly important in Japanese society as it undergoes changes to the lifetime employment system and traditional corporate culture, according to an annual government white paper on lifestyles released Friday.
Volunteer workers are also becoming essential in providing social services not covered by the government, says the Economic Planning Agency's 44th white paper on lifestyles.
Measures should be taken to increase volunteer activities by individuals and support nonprofit organizations engaged in such work, the paper says.
