A 29-year-old Chiba police officer is believed to have killed himself with a shot to the head at the "koban" police box where he was stationed, police said Wednesday.

Police believe the officer shot himself shortly before 5 a.m. Wednesday at the koban in front of Toke Station in Chiba's Midori Ward.

A 39-year-old officer on the second floor of the post heard a gunshot at 4:55 a.m. and went downstairs to find his subordinate on the floor leaning against a wall after a shot to the head. The officer said only one round was fired.

No suicide note was found, police said
