The Empress, who has been coughing since earlier this month, will at her own request undergo a special X-ray checkup later this week, the vice grand steward of the Imperial Household Agency said Monday.
Speaking at a regular press conference, Toshio Yuasa said the Empress has lost about 4 kg "since the beginning of the fall." He said the Imperial Household Agency has not yet set the date for the checkup.
On Oct. 8, the Empress underwent laser treatment to relieve pressure in her right eye. The treatment was aimed at preventing glaucoma, which is marked by increased pressure in the eye and results in damage to the optic disk and gradual blindness.
