Japan and Russia have agreed on various measures to enhance bilateral economic cooperation, paving the way for a summit meeting next week in Tokyo between Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
During talks Friday evening in Tokyo, Foreign Minister Yohei Kono and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Khristenko drew up several documents to promote Tokyo-Moscow economic cooperation, a Foreign Ministry official said.
The enhanced cooperation measures include a new economic cooperation program that follows the Hashimoto-Yeltsin Plan, which was adopted in 1997 by then Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto and then Russian President Boris Yeltsin, the official said.
