The Electric Power Development Co. is about to sign contracts to build power generation facilities in Thailand and China, company officials said Friday.
The power developer eyes investing several tens of billions of yen to build such facilities over the next five to 10 years with special emphasis on Asian projects, the officials said.
The EPDC's core business has involved building power generation facilities in Japan and selling electricity to private-sector power companies for resale to households and corporate customers.
The company has already invested in a geothermal plant in the Philippines that started generating power in January 1998.
The company envisions building a coal-powered electricity generation plant in India by teaming up with Marubeni Corp. and local concerns.
With these active overseas expansionary programs, the company wants to make up for an expected cut in revenues stemming from its domestic power wholesale business divisions amid the ongoing power wholesale business liberalization, they said.
