Schoolchildren evacuated from Miyake Island arrived Wednesday afternoon at a school in western Tokyo that will be their temporary home shortly after an evacuation order was issued for all parts of the volcanic island.
The students arrived after traveling for six hours aboard a liner and another 31/2 hours battling traffic on local roads.
A total of 140 students -- 45 elementary school students, 31 junior high students and 64 high school students -- unloaded their hastily packed belongings after their arrival at Akikawa High School in Akiruno, western Tokyo, at 1:40 p.m.
