Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori on Friday urged his Nepalese counterpart, Girija Prasad Koirala, to ratify a global treaty banning nuclear tests, saying it would help persuade neighbors India and Pakistan to do the same, a Japanese official said.

"If Nepal ratifies the treaty, it would have an impact on India and Pakistan," Mori was quoted as saying in a meeting with Prime Minister Koirala at his official residence.

Koirala said that Nepal -- which is bordered by nuclear powers India, Pakistan and China -- is committed to nuclear nonproliferation, according to the Japanese official.

Nepal has signed the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty on nuclear weapons, but has yet to ratify it.
