Five "bio toilets" set up on Mount Fuji are becoming popular among people climbing Japan's highest mountain.

Up to 400 climbers a day have been using the facilities, with some quoted as saying "It never smells" and "It's comfortable."

The bio-toilets, so-called because they are aimed at reducing sewage disposal on the mountain, were established in July by a nonprofit organization and the Shizuoka Prefectural Government.

The Mount Fuji Club placed one unit each halfway along two climbing routes in Shizuoka and Yamanashi prefectures leading to and from the top of the mountain. The 3,776-meter-high mountain stretches over parts of both prefectures.
