Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori on Tuesday called for closer ties between Japan and India's booming information technology sector, unveiling a plan that would increase the number of exchanges between IT experts from both countries.

"I see great potential in promoting close dialogue and cooperation" between India's world-renowned software technology and Japan's advanced manufacturing skills, Mori told a gathering in this southern city, where many of India's high-tech industries are concentrated.

"But despite the potential, cooperation between Japan and India (in the IT field) has been insufficient," he said.

Mori said that to promote greater collaboration on IT, the two countries should first expand general economic exchanges. Japan will send a large-scale economic mission to the country in late October as part of that effort, he said.
